The Reno Police Department is warning the community of a real estate scam in which victims are being deceived into sending money to fraudulent companies.

Police say the fraudulent companies use spoof accounts to collect the money.

The department says to follow these steps to ensure you don't fall victim to the scheme:

  • Use caution when replying and complying with instructions provided by email accounts
  • Look closely at the name on the email account, its characters, and domain name
  • Finally, confirm the instructions over the phone with your real estate company and contact your bank

If you have been a victim of this crime or a similar crime, contact the Reno Police Department at (775) 334-2188.
