Westbound I-80 reopens after fatal wrong-way crash near Fernley
FERNLEY, Nev. (KOLO) -1 P.M. UPDATE: A wrong-way driver died in a crash on Interstate 80 early Sunday.
Westbound Interstate 80 traffic was diverted through Wadsworth from about 2:15 a.m. until early afternoon, said Nevada State Police Trooper Jericho Rogers.
NSP received a call of a wrong-way driver in a sedan going east on westbound Interstate 80 near Derby Dam at about 1:42 a.m., Rogers said. At 2:04 a.m., it received a report of a collision between the sedan and a tractor-trailer rig going west.
The sedan driver died in the crash. Two people in the tractor-trailer were not injured. Both vehicles caught fire and burned extensively.
All leaked fuels were recovered but the frozen foods in the trailer thawed and had to be cleaned up.
The identity of the driver is not being released at this time.
12:30 P.M. UPDATE: Interstate 80 has reopened.
A Nevada State Police representative has not returned calls seeking information and there was no one available on scene to give details.
ORIGINAL STORY: Westbound Interstate 80 is closed near Fernley following a fatal crash involving a commercial vehicle.
Traffic is being detoured.
The crash happened about 1:42 a.m. on Sunday near mile marker 45.
The Nevada Department of Transportation indicates it will be a lengthy closure.
