Suspect identified in officer-involved shooting in Carson City
CARSON CITY, Nev. (KOLO) - UPDATE, FEBRUARY 23: The Carson City Sheriff’s Office released new details into an officer-involved shooting that happened Tuesday following a two-hour standoff with the suspect.
According to investigators, deputies responded to reports of a man stealing catalytic converters from vehicles around 4:30 a.m. Feb. 22, 2022 in the area of N. Curry Street and E. Adeline Street. The man has now been identified as 21-year-old Luis Santana of Carson City.
Deputies said Santana was holding a lit “blow torch”, a machete, and had a hatchet strapped to his wrist. Investigators say he was trying to burn a parked car. For two hours, deputies attempted to verbally gain control of the suspect. The sheriff’s office said he remained agitated and aggressive. After using non-lethal options to try and get Santana to cooperate, he allegedly ran off to the 200 block of Adeline Street.
Around 6:50 a.m., a nearby resident walked out of his garage and the suspect charged at the 66-year-old man, the sheriff’s office said. The suspect was then shot by a deputy in the lower half of his body.
The suspect was treated at the scene, then taken to Renown Medical where he is now in stable condition.
No other injuries were reported.
The Deputy Sheriff who shot the suspect has been placed on administrative leave.
The incident is being investigated by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and State Investigations Division.
When Santana is released from the hospital he will be facing the following charges: Assault with a Deadly Weapon Against an Elderly Person, Arson 3rd Degree, Arson 4th Degree and Obstructing a Public Officer.
The Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate this incident and asks that anyone with information contact the 24-hour Communications Center at 775-887-2677 (COPS) or the Investigations Division on Monday at 775-887-2500.
