RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - OCT. 22 4 P.M. The suspect shot and killed Tuesday by Repeat Offender Program detectives was trying to flee, the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office said.

Richard Thomas had an arrest warrant for a firearms charge at the time of the incident, the sheriff’s office said. The sheriff’s office took over investigation of the fatal police shooting.

ROP detectives tried to stop Thomas near North Virginia Street and Golden Valley Drive at about 1 p.m. on Tuesday.

Thomas fled and his vehicle collided with an unmarked police vehicle. One detective was pinned between Thomas’ vehicle and a stopped police vehicle. Another detective attempting to detain Thomas was still partially in Thomas’ vehicle as he fled at high speed, the sheriff’s office said.

A Reno Police Department detective and a Sparks Police Department detective fired shots as Thomas fled. Thomas’ vehicle came to rest near the southbound onramp to U.S. 395 and Golden Valley Drive.

One detective suffered injuries after falling from a moving vehicle and was treated and released from the hospital.

OCT. 21 8:20 A.M.: The Washoe County Medical Examiner’s Office has released the name of the man killed in Tuesday’s officer-involved shooting in Golden Valley. Richard Thomas, 41, of Reno, was shot multiple times by Reno Police officers. An autopsy on Thomas was completed Wednesday.

The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office is handling the investigation of the incident.

OCT. 20 9:15 A.M.: The Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office has confirmed that one person was killed in Tuesday’s officer-involved-shooting in Golden Valley.

Golden Valley Road was closed for several hours during the investigation. The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office is conducting the shooting investigation, but the WCSO has released few details.

Shortly after the 1 P.M. shooting, a Reno Police sergeant told KOLO 8, a regional unit was conducting an investigation at the time at Golden Valley Road just west of US 395. The regional unit involves officers from multiple jurisdictions.

One Reno Police Officer suffered a minor injury.

An autopsy will be performed today to confirm the person’s identity.
