Community helps police identify burglary suspect
RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - A man is facing several charges in connection with a string of recent home and commercial burglaries in the Reno-Sparks area.
Investigators say multiple commercial burglaries have occurred, mostly during the early morning hours, where a rock was used to break the windows to businesses. The suspect then reportedly targeted cash registers or other valuables in the business. A series of home burglaries happened during the same time frame, including a home invasion robbery in Sparks. Video surveillance of the suspect and his vehicle were used to link the cases together.
In early June, a resident shared doorbell video on social media of a suspicious prowler in their neighborhood. On Tuesday, The Regional Crime Suppression Unit located a possible suspect based on that social media post. Police say they were able to confirm the man seen in the video was in fact the suspect from the recent burglaries. The suspect, identified as Barry Michael Jones, was taken into custody during a traffic stop.
During the traffic stop, police say Jones was in possession of a firearm stolen from the robbery in Sparks, as well as a controlled substance. Further investigation showed that Jones had other stolen firearms as well as large amounts of stolen property.
